Your First Appointment

For new students of the Dharma, this page will assist you in preparing for your first appointment. The main things to remember are to be in the most open and calm state you can, and be as respectful as possible. The rest of this information is a good overview, but if you do not remember everything it is OK. Your best effort will be greatly appreciated, and you will learn the rest as you continue your studies.

What to bring with you

It is traditional to bring some type of offering for Rinpoche. In addition, you may bring any combination of the following:

  • A Kata, if you have one and know how to offer it.
  • The Lam Rim, if you are currently reading it.
  • A mala or tenga if you have one.
  • Written list of questions and a tablet for taking notes.
  • Special seating only if you need it. The Dharma center has many types of cushions available.

Arriving at your appointment

Please arrive promptly for your appointment. Often, students come a few minutes early to have time to calm their minds and generally let go of the day's hectic activities. Remove your shoes just inside the Dharma center door.

Entering the appointment room

Typically, you will begin your appointment in the following way. If you do not know how to do any of the following items, you may read about them on the site, ask another student, or ask Rinpoche when you arrive.

If Domo Geshe Rinpoche is not in the room, it is appropriate to stand when she enters. If Rinpoche is seated on the teaching cushion, proceed with the following:

  • You may set whatever you have brought with you to the side. either on a low table, or on the floor with the offerings and Dharma materials supported by other items.
  • At this time, if you are a holder of Buddhist refuge, you take refuge and complete three prostrations.
  • If you have difficulty for any reason you may simply stand or bow with hands folded.
  • Next you may offer your Kata and other items for Rinpoche.
  • After you make your offerings, select a suitable cushion and take a seat.
  • Enjoy your appointment, paying close attention to the teachings.
